Abstract

Abstract: InIndia, the exponential growth of population and the consequently growing numberof residences have aggravated the problem of household waste. Like many othertowns of India, Mariani, a small town located in the Jorhat district of Assamalso faces serious problems in terms of household waste disposal. Thehouseholds of Mariani generate and discharge a huge amount of untreated wastedaily. In this study, an attempt has been made to analyze the scenario ofhousehold waste disposal in Mariani town by means of a KAP survey. Interviewand personal observation were used to collect the data. The data so collectedis tabulated and processed to supplement the analysis through them. Thefindings of the study indicate towards many positive aspects along with thenegative ones. The positive aspects are mostly related to the awareness andefforts made by the residents, whereas the negative aspects are mostly relatedto the improper methods of waste disposal adopted by the people and theexisting scenario of the disposed waste. However, the study indicates that iftaken care of in a concerted manner, the problem of household waste disposal inMariani Town can be tackled.
