Abstract

Abstract: Water in India is primarily a statesubject. Water is important factor in our life. It is fact that if water isused there will be waste. India as a developing country also faces watercrisis. Sequencing batch reactors (SBRs), due to its operational flexibilityand excellent process control possibilities, are being extensively used for thetreatment of wastewater which nowadays is fast becoming contaminated with newerand more complex pollutants. It is also possible to include different expandingarray of configurations and various operational modifications to meet theeffluent limits which are also continuously getting upgraded. This articleprovides basic description of SBR process along with its functional andphysical variants that lead to improve the removal of nutrients and emergingcontaminants. The significance of selectors and various recent advancements inthe application of SBR has been discussed along with the possibilities held bySBR process in the treatment of wastewater of different origins and compositionto produce effluent of reusable quality.
