Abstract

Abstract: India, as an emerging economy, is facing thechallenges of the rapid and uncontrolled urbanization. Production andsubsequent management of municipal solid waste has been emerged as a majorchallenge for the various stakeholders. A major component of municipal solid waste is biomass that can be utilizedto produce electricity which in turn reduces the load on Municipal Corporation.Study shows that most of the solid waste is discarded illogically in open dumpswhich pose a major concern to public health and environment. The unhygienicdisposal of animal biomass could result into a serious health concern due tospread of many pathogens via various environmental matrices. The present studyreviews the various concerns and methods used for the sustainable utilizationof biomass solid waste.
