Abstract: InIndian society, woman occupies a vital position and venerable place. The Vedasglorified women as the mother, the creator, one who gives life and worshippedher as a ‘Devi’ or Goddess. But their glorification was rather mythical for atthe same time, in India women found herself totally suppressed and subjugatedin a patriarchal society. Religion, customs, age-old prejudices, etc. have putIndian women in a subservient and exploitable position in many domains of life.Low rates of participation in education, lack of economic independence, valuebiases operating against them, etc, have resulted in the women being dependenton men and other institutions of authority like the family, neighbor and thesociety. They are usually ignorant of their rights and even if they are not, they have very less access to justice. The issues related to women are beingraised and discussed in various for a, in the recent times. Of these, ‘violenceagainst women’ is gaining more and more support and recognition, the worldover. But despite the enactment of laws, formulation of reformative legalprocesses, provision of legal aid to the needy, extensive use of the provisionof Public Interest Litigation, conduct of Family Courts, Women/Familycounseling centers etc., women in India have a long way to go in concretizingtheir Constitutional Goals into reality. The present paper is an attempt toidentify the causes of the social menace and finding the hardcore reality.
